About Us
What We Do
We at the Engaged University facilitate and foster relationships between the University of Maryland and our neighboring communities to cultivate a shared sense of place, trust, hope, and understanding.
We build relationships by assessing the needs and assets of the University and the surrounding community so that available resources can be redirected in mutually beneficial ways.
We generate university and community support for youth and family development, community building, and cultural democracy projects; manage and distribute seed grants for university—community collaborations; and research and disseminate information about Prince George’s County and the University of Maryland.
Through these efforts, the relationships that we cultivate allow for the interaction of academic theory with advocacy and community practice to make the neighborhoods in the areas surrounding College Park more livable and sustainable. Positive social change is achieved within the university and in the surrounding neighborhoods by implementing programs that promote racial and economic justice, immigrant rights, non-violent conflict resolution, environmental sustainability, and fulfilling community life.
